Professor Michael Khor obtained his B Sc (Hons) and PhD degrees from Monash University, Australia. He worked as an Experimental Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Melbourne before joining the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1989. He has held a number of academic, research and administrative appointments, such as Director of Research; Director, Research Support Office; Deputy Director, Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA), Singapore Office; Director (Projects) at the National Research Foundation (NRF); Associate Provost (Research), President’s Office, NTU; Director, NTU Venture; and currently Director of Research Support Office and Bibliometrics Analysis.
Prof Khor served as Director (Projects) at the National Research Foundation (NRF) on a secondment from March 2008 - Sep 2009. At NRF, he was responsible for a range of research initiatives and programmes. Some of these included the Competitive Research Programme (CRP), NRF Research Fellowship, Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) building construction, Clean Water, Clean Energy, Biomedical Sciences and Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Strategic Research Programmes, Research Centres of Excellence and the National Framework on Innovation and Enterprise (NFIE). He had also helped roll out a number of NFIE initiatives.
Upon return to NTU in Oct 2009, Prof Khor served as Associate Provost (Research), President’s Office. As Associate Provost (Research), Prof Khor supported the Provost in driving the research agenda through building upon research opportunities and partnerships, and on research strategies for multi- disciplinary initiatives through coordination with the Colleges. He worked closely with Provost on the growth of research funding, the management of research resources and on attracting top research talents and faculty to NTU.
Prof Michael Khor was appointed as Director of Research Support Office and Bibliometrics Analysis in Oct 2011. Drawing on citation indices such as Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s SciVerse Scopus, Prof Khor explores the impact of NTU’s research outcomes and identify emerging fields that NTU wishes to develop capabilities in. Prof Khor is also instrumental in promoting research administration in Singapore and Asia. He is Convenor for the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) since March 2013.
Prof Khor has secured research funding through external competitive research grants and the industry, and has extensive research collaborations with universities and research laboratories around the world. Among his collaborators are: Ecole des Mines (ENSMP) in Paris, LERMPS in University of Technology Belfort-Monbeliard, Austrian Research Council in Seibersdorf, Czech Technical University in Prague, Commonwealth Industrial Scientific Research Organization (CSIRO) in Melbourne, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) in Hyderabad.
