As I welcome all of you back to work and wish you each a positive and safe new year, I recognise that the last few weeks have been difficult for many of our colleagues, friends and families who have been affected by the tragic bushfires across Australia. Our thoughts are with all who are affected.
In the face of such horrifying conditions, I have been inspired by the courage, resilience, and co-operation that has been demonstrated by so many people in Australia and around the world. I particularly want to recognise and thank everyone who has played a part in supporting our communities during this devastating period. These actions do not come without taking an emotional toll and I encourage you to seek any support that your institution has in place to assist staff at such times.
Whilst Australia grapples with this terrible situation, and the potential for these consequences of the climate emergency to continue throughout the summer, the work of research will inevitably continue. If you are able to do so, I encourage you to reach out to colleagues across your institution to check in on them and identify any additional support or changes in circumstances that may impact on their capabilities.
Once again I wish everyone a safe 2020.
With best wishes,
Dr Ross McLennan
