Professional Development Workshop: Not Everything That Can Be Counted Counts

Registrations Now Open

Not Everything That Can Be Counted Counts

Bibliometrics have been creating fireworks in academia for years – from ERA to mpact Factors, from the h-index to the Times Higher Ed ranking. But much like fireworks, things can end with an unpleasant bang if you’re not careful what you’re doing. Sometimes they’re useful and sometimes they’re remarkably counterproductive and misleading.

This presentation highlights the limitations, drawbacks and potential pitfalls of some of the common aspects of bibliometrics, including author metrics, institutional evaluations, altmetrics and journal metrics.

Adam Finch, CSIRO Bibliometric Analyst

Adam Finch is CSIRO’s bibliometric analyst, working within the Science Impact & Policy team, deploying publication analysis to demonstrate the academic impact of the organisation's research. He has worked in publication analysis for over a decade, initially as the bibliometrician for the global publisher Wiley-Blackwell before moving to Australia and working in the Research Office of Flinders University, then as a Solutions Consultant for the data provider Thomson Reuters. He is the author of several journal articles, book chapters and commissioned reports in bibliometrics, in which field he is currently undertaking PhD research at Swinburne University of Technology.

This professional development workshop is FREE to participants.

Date: Thursday, 1 June 2017 1.30 pm - 4.00 pm
