The workshop will be presented by two leading and experienced research management professionals from New Zealand and Australia. Dr John Smart has had 25 years experience in research management spanning industry, government and the tertiary sector in New Zealand including for the New Zealand national funding agency (FRST at the time) as Group Manager responsible for strategy, for the University of Auckland as Director Research Management and, more latterly, for one of New Zealand’s National Science Challenges (High-Value Nutrition)”
While exposed to the main theoretical models of business strategy and organizational leadership John has developed a pragmatic approach to strategy development. Each situation is different and while there are tools that can be applied across these situations they need to be customized – it’s your organization, your strategy. “Two comments have stuck in my head over the years – ‘Strategy is Destiny’ (from an Executive Leadership Programme at Stanford) and ‘Strategy is important but implementation is critical’ (from a Regional Manager at a marketing workshop in Malaysia) - strategy that isn’t implemented well is a waste of effort.
John will be supported by Dr Mark Hochman, the ARMS Business Development Manager: Education and Professional Development. Mark will discuss the five factors critical to successful strategy implementation with a focus on implementing research strategy and measuring/monitoring research performance in University settings in Australia.
The provisional program for the workshop includes:
- Organisational Research Strategy including theoretical strategy models,
- Developing a strategy,
- Strategic analysis including organisational, opportunity and competitor analysis
- Identification of options to improve performance and
- Developing an implementation plan.
- Assessing your Research Office performance.
