The increasing emphasis on the societal relevance and practical application of research means that the demonstration of research impact has become a strategic priority for most (if not all) universities. In this session you’ll learn about the key concepts and context of research impact, and hear about how research management professionals working in diverse areas such as grant support, ethics, compliance, communications and industry partnerships can contribute positively to research impact and engagement initiatives. 

Hosted by the NSW ARMS Chapter and Catherine McElhone (ARMS Research Impact SIG and UTS), this hybrid event will feature short presentations by Katrina Trewin (University of Western Sydney) and Professor Bronwyn Hemsley (UTS) followed by a panel discussion around the intersection of research management and research impact support.

Professor Bronwyn Hemsley - University of Technology Sydney

Professor Bronwyn Hemsley is Head of Speech Pathology at University of Technology Sydney and co-lead of the UTS Disability Research Network. She also chairs a Faculty committee on the use of GenAI in health research. She is a Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist, Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia and Fellow of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Bronwyn has been awarded more than $5M in research funding, enabling the development of an extensive program of research relating to communication, swallowing, social media, and other assistive technologies (including mobile apps, VR/AR, generative AI, and 3D food printing). Her significant contributions to inclusive co-design and real-world applications have been translated to educational settings, shaped policy, and guided clinical practice. In 2023 she was recognised with the UTS Medal for Research Impact and the Sax Institute Research Action Award for her work enhancing communication and swallowing functions through innovative technologies and methods, particularly for individuals with disabilities and teaching of their support workers.

 


 

 


 

 

Mr James Linton - Macquarie University

James Linton recently joined Macquarie University Incubator, managing the diverse community of entrepreneurs, researchers, students, and expert mentors. With over a decade of experience, James previously held various roles at the Westmead Health and Innovation Precinct, focusing on research and innovation in the Biotech and MedTech sectors. James developed a passion for innovation while initially managing a neuroscience research laboratory, witnessing how research and innovation directly impact patients’ quality of life. His expertise broadened to coordinating collaborative research and innovation projects across clinical environments, universities, and medical research institutes. James played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of commercialisation and entrepreneurial thinking among researchers and clinicians. Now at Macquarie Incubator, he is leveraging his skills and passion for innovation in STEM to support startups across diverse sectors. As the Incubator Manager, James collaborates with inspiring company founders in fields such as healthtech, fintech, defense, software, manufacturing, and sustainability innovation.

 


 

 


 

Dr Allan Teale - University of Technology Sydney

Dr Allan Teale is a proud Wiradjuri man, academic, property sector specialist and First Nations advocate. In his current role as Indigenous Research Engagement Officer, he supports Indigenous research outcomes and learning pathways at UTS. In 2023, he was a Churchill Fellow and completed his PhD investigating transparency and governance in transportation planning, focused identifying opportunities to provide First Nations communities with a voice in transportation infrastructure decision making. As a core member of The Indigenous Infrastructure and Sustainable Housing Alliance (TIISHA), over the last 6 years he has facilitated the execution of a collaborative initiative between the Murrin Bridge Local Aboriginal Land Council, the Murrin Bridge Preschool Association and UTS to design and construct a new community hub and preschool extension, providing the community with critical, tailor-designed public spaces. This significant project is now having tangible outcomes for the community. Allan plays an active role in the community as a UTS Human Ethics Committee Member, Chairman and Committee Member of NSW Environmental Trust Technical Review Committee and Community Advisory for Sydney National Parks and Wildlife.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms Perrine Huber - University of New South Wales

Perrine Huber (she/her) is currently working on the development of the University of New South Wales’ inaugural Societal Impact Framework in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor & President as part of the next UNSW Strategy (10+ years). She is an ex-Foreign Official and for six years was based in San Francisco at the Swiss Embassy’s education and research outpost connecting sectors on a neutral ground to discuss solutions to the biggest global challenges of our times. Previously, she held senior positions with the European Union’s National Institute for Culture, the Biennale of Sydney, and the global architecture and urban design firm Grimshaw.

She is also a published writer and is most interested in the power of education, research, and community engagement to transform lives and improve society at large. She has BA in Art History and Theory, and International Relations/Governance from the University of Sydney, and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Cities and Communities from Harvard Extension School.

Dr Shantala Mohan - Western Sydney University

Dr Shantala Mohan is currently Executive Director, Research at Western Sydney University. In this role, she plays a pivotal role in steering the strategic development of the University’s research and research support. This role leads initiatives to enhance the institution's reputation for research excellence and impact and drives strategies that enable researchers and research cohorts to realise their research ambitions. Shantala oversees effective management of University-wide research functions and infrastructure; fosters external funding opportunities; maintains currency of knowledge of the national and international research landscapes, ensures compliance with internal and external reporting bodies and funding agencies and appropriate due diligence processes for managing foreign arrangements. Furthermore, Shantala provides leadership in ensuring competitiveness of grant proposals, developing research capacity and in delivering strategic support for researchers and research. She is also responsible for the overall promotion and administration of research services, including data management and reporting, managing research budgets and finances, grant submissions, contract negotiations, research infrastructure, ethics and overseeing systems and process improvements. Shantala’s previous roles as Director Research Impact and Integrity; Director, Research Strategy; and Assistant Vice-Chancellor, enabled her to acquire strategic leadership and planning skills.
