Summary:  The Senior Management role  provides advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Industry Engagement), and all levels of academic and professional staff regarding institutional research performance and its context.

  • HEO 10 Classification - $110,278 plus 17% superannuation (reduced salary under AUJPF) *
  • Full-time, Continuing position

About the position:

The Senior Manager provides advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Industry Engagement), and all levels of academic and professional staff regarding University research performance and its context. In this role you will be responsible for managing the implementation and development of the University’s international ranking strategy. The Senior Manager also provides strategic leadership and management of to the Research Performance Team in the Research Office to drive the implementation of the rankings strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In order to be successful in this position, the incumbent’s duties and skills will include:

  • Supporting the delivery, measurement, and refinement of the University’s research strategy and plans
  • Advising the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), Senior Executive, and Executive Director, Research Office, on strategic and operational matters relating to institutional research performance
  • Providing leadership and management of the Research Performance team within the Research Office and ensuring a high level of service quality and the continuous improvement of research performance information, systems and reporting
  • Ensuring University submissions to rankings agencies and Government performance and impact evaluations and data collections are accurate, timely, and contribute to the University’s reputation  
  • Providing analysis and advice on research evaluation and measurement including international rankings, and managing the implementation of the institutional ranking strategy
  • Managing and ensuring the effective communication of research performance information, including institutional reporting, benchmarking, and data in ways that support research leaders, researchers and University stakeholders
  • Working with relevant stakeholders including Information Services, Planning and Governance, the University Library, and Research Office teams to ensure the development and efficient maintenance of research data and systems meets current and emerging needs

Essential Skills Required:

The key essential skills required for this role are:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or experience and expertise in the provision of strategic policy advice affecting the direction of a complex organisation, or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Awareness and understanding of the activities, objectives and strategic direction of higher education and research enterprises in the current and emerging global contexts, including knowledge and understanding of international ranking systems and higher education research quality and assessment issues
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development, implementation and evaluation of high level strategy in a complex organisational setting, including the ability to work closely with staff and leaders to develop and implement strategy
  • Strong leadership skills including the ability to negotiate, motivate, influence and build relationships with academic and professional staff of all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high level project management skills, including the ability to achieve objectives operating within complex organisation structures, and multiple stakeholder settings
  • Demonstrated financial and budgeting ability

*  La Trobe University is currently operating under a temporary variation to our Collective Agreement, which is the Australian Universities Job Protection Framework (AUJPF).  This means staff have received a reduction in their salary for the duration of the temporary variation which ceases on 30 June 2021.  From 1 July 2021, the AUJPF will cease and staff salaries will resume and include a scheduled increase under the Collective Agreement which will be $123,043 plus 17% superannuation.
