National Executive

The Executive Committee is the governing body of the Society. It controls and directs ARMS’ business, including its committees and determines its promotion, policies, strategic planning and progress towards achievement of its mission and goals.

The new membership of the Executive Committee took up their roles after the 2011 Annual General Meeting on 15 September. The committee comprises:

President: Ren Yi, Director, HDR Office, Macquarie University






President-Elect: Moira Clay, Director of Academic & Research Services, Telethon Institute for Child Health Research





Immediate Past President: Gillian Nicholson







Treasurer and Chair of the Professional Development Committee: Anne Cronin, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute






Secretary: Jan Hocking (University of Melbourne). Following a long career as a management consultant in strategic planning for a number of sectors including education, Janette Hocking joined University of Melbourne as Manager Industry Liaison in the Faculty of Science in 2004. This role involved making connections between the research and researchers and potential industry clients. It was at this time she also joined ARMS and became a member of the Victoria/Tasmania Chapter committee and soon after the Chapter Convenor. In 2008 she was the Convenor of the ARMS Annual Conference in Hobart. In 2009 she was elected to the National Executive as a Committee member. She is currently Secretary of the ARMS Executive. Recently Janette has completed a project on research pricing for the University of Melbourne and will be presenting a paper on this at the upcoming INORMS and SRA conferences.

Barbara Palmer (Manager, Office of Research, University of the Sunshine Coast)

Ms Barbara Palmer has worked in the field of research management since 2005, the last three years as Manager, Office of Research at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.  For more than a decade prior to this she worked in education and training in both the private and public sector including time with Queensland Health and the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE in Townsville and Charles Darwin University (then Northern Territory University) in Darwin.

Barbara was also the Convenor and Co-Convenor of the QLD/NT/PNG Chapter of ARMS for three years from 2009-2011.





Rochelle Finlay (Senior Portfolio Manager, External Research Funding Unit, Victoria University of Wellington) has 20 years of experience in research, relationship management, programme management, and in the development and implementation of strategies for growing and managing investments in research. Rochelle is currently Senior Portfolio Manager at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Previously she has worked in a number of organisations within New Zealand’s diverse research community, including Crown Research Institutes, Government regulatory bodies, and The Foundation for Research Science and Technology (now the Ministry of Science and Innovation). Rochelle was also the convenor of the New Zealand and Pacific Chapter of ARMS in 2010.



In 2012 the Executive are scheduled to meet quarterly on the following dates: Wellington, 19 March 2012; Perth, 18 June 2012; Gold Coast, 17 September 2012.
