President's Message

Becoming involved with ARMS and other sister societies has enabled me to form a network providing support, inspiration, and friendship. Most importantly it has enabled me to cope with the challenges and opportunities of being a professional, working in Research Management where there are constant changes in research enterprise and the environment we work.

The Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) is the leading organisation dedicated to supporting research excellence and the enhancement of the research enterprise through the professional development of research managers and administrators and the promotion of the profession of research management.

Prior to my involvement with ARMS, I was on the academic staff at the University of Melbourne. I moved to the University of Queensland (UQ) and secured a position as research manager in the Faculty of Social Behavioural Sciences, this being my first research management role. I was excited and at the same time puzzled by all different schemes and tasks and UQ was a corporate member of ARMS. The Director of Office of Research and Postgraduate Studies was actively involved with ARMS and suggested I participate in ARMS activities and also join the research management network.

Becoming a member of ARMS was a very important step in my research management career and I met many talented and helpful colleagues from other organisations in Australasia. The ARMS established professional network is extremely valuable and I learnt a lot during ARMS training sessions, workshops and conferences.

I encourage you to become a member of ARMS either as an individual or through your organisation's corporate membership and actively participate in ARMS activities. Plan to attend chapter functions as well as the annual conference to enhance your networks and to establish new friendships.
