About the opportunity

From 2022, the University of Sydney will deliver its four-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program in two streams: a Metropolitan stream based on the University’s Camperdown campus in Sydney, and a Dubbo stream based at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo. The Dubbo stream will admit 24 students each year, giving preference to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander candidates, those of rural origin, and those of lower socio-economic status. The MD curriculum integrates preclinical sciences with clinical sciences, clinical skills, population health, ethics, medical law and professionalism being taught in parallel with preclinical sciences.

  • Year 1 comprises a foundational block that includes an introduction to infection and immunity, and eight system-based blocks: Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Endocrinology & Nutrition, Sexual Health, Nephrology & Urology, Gastroenterology, and Neurosciences.
  • Year 2 begins and ends with clinical immersion terms in Medicine & Surgery sandwiching a further preclinical term covering haematology, oncology and other preclinical topics.
  • Year 3 and Year 4 are both clinical, with Year 3 devoted to specialty fields (Perinatal & Womens Health, Child & Adolescent Health, Psychiatry & Addiction Medicine, and Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics & Intensive Care) as well as a block devoted to the MD Research Project.
  • Year 4 begins and ends with elective terms, sandwiching further clinical blocks in Medicine, Surgery and General Practice.

The metropolitan and Dubbo streams will share teaching materials, including a comprehensive set of online lecture modules. The delivery of the Anatomy curriculum in Sydney will retain the use of human cadaver prosections, whereas high-fidelity models and sophisticated visual technology only will be used in Dubbo. 

The School of Rural Health is looking for an education focused Senior Lecturer to join their highly expert team. In your new role, you are expected to make significant contributions to teaching and learning within the school and engage in education leadership at the school or university level. You will be expected to dedicate most of your time to education up to 70/80%. The position will involve undertaking a range of duties relating to coordination of the delivery and assessment of Year One in the Sydney Medical School Doctor of Medicine Program delivered in Dubbo. You will be expected to undertake academic teaching in at least one of the preclinical fields listed below:

  • Anatomy, Embryology & Histology
  • Biochemistry
  • Human genetics
  • Immunology & Microbiology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology

Reporting to the Head of Clinical School, School of Rural Health in Dubbo, you will have  a supervision and leadership role in the program including managing other academic staff within the portfolio.

The position is located in Dubbo with some regular travel between rural and metropolitan sites required.

  • relevant qualifications outlined in the position description including a Bachelor or Higher Degree in a biomedical sciences field, or a Bachelor of Medicine/Doctor of Medicine (MD) /Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Minimum of 4 years post primary medical/biomedical sciences qualification or Masters level qualification in a related field or PhD in a related field.
  • demonstrated excellence in research or scholarly activities relevant to educational design and practice
  • deep and broad experience in teaching and learning, as evidenced by leading team teaching within an established program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings
  • proven success in supporting the academic endeavour from curriculum design to engaging in research/scholarship and providing a student enabling environment
  • significant experience in supervising others and coordinating team activities
  • applied understanding of contemporary pedagogical practices in the discipline.
