Call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) - Education and Professional Development Committee

The Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS)  is an international organisation dedicated to the professional development of research managers and administrators, the promotion of the profession of research management and the enhancement of the research enterprise.  The Society values a stronger, vibrant research sector in the region, high standards of research governance including the protection of integrity and ethics of research, and the profession of research management as integral to the research endeavour.

ARMS comprises over 2800 members from universities, medical research institutes, Commonwealth research agencies, State and federal government departments and other research entities. It is structured into a number of Chapters, based around Australian States but also New Zealand and Singapore –and includes Special Interest Groups convened around communities of specific research management issues.

ARMS is calling for membership to the Education and Professional Development Committee from passionate research management professionals who are current financial members of ARMS and are able to commit up to 2 days a month for up to 2 years, but no more than two consecutive terms (i.e. 4 year maximum term) toward the operations of this new standing committee.

There are up to eight (8) vacant positions currently available to be filled.


Purpose of the Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC)

The Education and Professional Development Committee will oversee the development, promotion, operational management and delivery of the Society’s Accreditation Program (Foundation and Professional) and other professional development activities to serve the needs of the members.


Specifically, the EPDC will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and developing international best-practice professional development opportunities, including sourcing programs from sister societies and other education and training providers;
  • Overseeing the implementation of the Society’s own Accreditation programs, recognising that the quality of content, delivery and assessment of these programs is the responsibility of the Accreditation Council;
  • Developing the content and oversee the delivery of the annual Conference Professional Development Workshop series;
  • Working with the Members Services Committee on the delivery of appropriate professional development opportunities at the Chapter level;
  • Overseeing the Society’s professional development awards programs.
  • Overseeing the Society’s mentoring activities; and
  • Providing quarterly reports to the Board on education and professional development activities, and other reports as requested by the Board.


Assessment Criteria

Intending applicants will be required to complete an EOI template and address the following assessment criteria:

  • More than five (5) years’ experience in the research management profession;
  • A track record in delivery of professional development programs. This could include as a Training Fellows or Case Study Assessor in the Society’s Accreditation program, the delivery of training and mentoring programs at a Chapter level, or the development of professional training in some other capacity outside the Society; and
  • A willingness to commit at least two days per month to the activities of the Committee.

Nominees will be assessed against these skills and experience criteria and if the number of nominees considered suitable exceeds the number of vacancies available then a ballot must be held.  Otherwise the suitable nominees will be deemed elected.
