NEWSLETTER OF ARMS JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2024 |
Recently, I attended two funerals - one of a relative and one of a friend. One funeral was for a life well-lived for the other, all would say that there was much more living to do. In the latter, as a result of medical research, my friend was with the world for around about a year longer than he would have been without. Shortly after those funerals, two medical researchers, who have undertaken landmark research into melanoma, were recognised as joint Australians of the Year.
Funerals are a time of reflection, as is the beginning of each year. We approach it with excitement and some trepidation - will it be the year that we achieve those goals and dreams, be they personal or professional? As a consequence, I have been reflecting that research is about "hope". |
Regardless of the type of research our institutions and researchers undertake, the hope is for that a new discovery, that fundamental truth, that impactful piece of applied research.
Overall, the hope is that it will make a difference through an original contribution to knowledge in the field or through a change in the environment, industry, communities, the economy or society. By extension, as Research Management Professionals, we are deeply connected to this perspective that research is about "hope", which should be and must be intrinsically positive. My point is let's start this year (or at least the remaining 10 months of it) with a mindset of making a positive and impactful contribution in supporting and enabling research at our institutions.
This year is very significant one for ARMS. It marks 25 years of research management excellence! Twenty five years ago, the Society was established by a hopeful and very forward-looking few. Look at us today!! Our Standing Committees and Chapters will be working to identify some special celebratory initiatives throughout the year and at our annual conference in Darwin. Please see our special logo above and feel free to add it to your signature blocks in celebration of this milestone!
On Board matters, the ARMS Board commenced the year with an induction and full Board meeting on the 1st and 2nd of February. We thank RMIT for providing the venue for our meeting. The main items of business covered include the upcoming review of our Strategic Plan, our member engagement strategies; marketing and communications and revisions to our By-Laws.
Member engagement will be very important for us this year. A reminder to connect with ARMS members across the geographic remit of the Society via the Skills Network – Please see more details below. I will be travelling to Singapore in May for an event run by the Singapore Chapter including a number of engagement visits to key stakeholders in the region. This follows from the very successful NZ visit in August last year where it was fabulous to meet with many Research Management Professionals from many research institutions and learn much more about the NZ research and innovation agenda.
Ultimately engagement starts with you - I am really keen to see many in-person events across our Chapters and look forward to hearing about them in the near future especially those in the first few months of the year. And as you know, the standout engagement event is the annual conference, which this year is in Darwin. In that regard, the call for abstracts for presentations and posters is now open and closes 12 April 2024. Opportunities are also available to support your attendance via Chapter Travel Awards (opening soon) and Indigenous/First Nations Conference Travel Award - see article below for full details.
And why not get involved in ARMS in 2024! We are currently seeking volunteer members to join a range of Standing Committees. Applications are being accepted from members who would like to contribute to our Education and professional Development Committee (EPDC); Governance, Finance and Audit Committee (GFAC); and Conferences and Major Events Committee. Please refer to article in this newsletter. On the topic of the Strategic Plan, the Board has recently put out a call seeking an independent Facilitator who will help guide discussions for the development of the next iteration of our Strategic Plan at a Strategic Planning Day of the Board in May. If this is something you can assist with or know someone who is experienced in providing this professional service, please pass on our call - see full details below.
Our Report to Members for period ending June 2023 was disseminated early last month. This report captures all of the achievement of the Society against our strategic priorities in support of our missions and goals. It shows how much we as a community have done for us as a community – I thank everyone who has contributed and have been involved in its production.
We previously advised that ARMS has joined forces with the Australian Council of Graduate research to re-launch the Australasian Research Training Network (ARTN). We are delighted to advise that ARTN will be hosting its first webinar on 25 March - Please refer to article below. As well as our Chapters, our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are a core element of what we do – it is through these that we develop communities of practice, share our experiences and debate hot topics and emerging areas in research management. Following from the Conference, there was a lot of interest in new SIGs being developed – we seek your involvement. Please see article the below. Finally, 2024 is also likely to bring significant policy and regulatory changes – this is still an emerging area but we will provide a policy update in our next Newsletter. Yours in ARMS, |
Dr Tania Bezzobs ARMS President |

| CREATING A SMOOTH TRANSITION: IMPLEMENTING AN ONLINE GRANT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR OUR RESEARCH FUNDING PROGRAM |
This presentation charts the challenges our organisation faced when moving from a paper- and email-based system to an online grants management system (OGMS). Cancer Council WA annually supports six to seven funding schemes, requiring high levels of administration; moving to the OGMS ensured the streamlining of |
this process. Implementing the OGMS across all schemes required 6 months of intense and focussed effort.
Within this period, we dealt with unanticipated challenges, such as system and operator errors that required finessing of the process. These challenges shaped the establishment of the system and presented opportunities to improve the program’s administration. This presentation provides a guide for all those intending to set up their own OGMS and will give you tips, techniques, and potential pitfalls to look out for so that your process is as streamlined as possible. DATE: Wednesday, 13 March 2024 TIME: 12PM - 1PM AEDT (Check your timezone here.)
SPEAKERS: Anna Nankivell & Naomi Offler, Cancer Council WA |

| SING CHAPTER EVENT SUMMARY |
The new Committee of ARMS-Singapore Chapter held its first networking event for 2024 on the 16th February 2024. The venue was at the Novena campus of the Lee Kong Chian Medical School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. |
This ARMS-SG Chapter hosted event marked a significant milestone as the first gathering since the Covid-19 pandemic. The occasion sought to bring together Research Management Professionals throughout Singapore, aligning with the Lunar New Year celebrations in this post-pandemic period. Nearly 70 Research Management Professionals from diverse academic institutions, hospitals and funding agencies across Singapore participated in this event. |
Co-Convenor of the ARMS-SG Chapter, Prof Michael Khor (far left), opened the event with an introduction to the role of ARMS in aiding Research Management Professionals, and key upcoming initiatives of the Chapter. This includes the ARMS-SG Chapter Conference 2024 which will be held on 24 May 2024 in line with ARMS President Tania Bezzobs’ visit to Singapore. Fellow co-convenor, Dr Willie Koh (left), gave a 45min presentation on the importance of research governance and compliance to research administration professionals. The presentation provided many contemporary and fascinating real-world case examples, which engaged the audience. This session saw active participation with many questions raised for discussion and elicited valuable feedback from the crowd.
| The networking event concluded with lunch, providing attendees with the invaluable opportunity to interact and engage with fellow professionals from other institutions, exchange best practices, and contribute to the growth of the local research administration landscape.

| VIC CHAPTER EVENT SUMMARY & UPDATE |
The VIC chapter held an end-of-year networking event in early December 2024 in Melbourne’s CBD, at Seamstress Restaurant and Bar.
About 40 research managers and administrators from 10 research organisations left their desks to converge on a beautiful Summer evening for networking with peers over delicious nibbles and drinks. |
This was a chance to informally meet and discuss research management with everyone from research office directors to librarians to those doing PhDs on research management. We shared insights and stories, met old friends and made new ones, and took the time to relax after the many achievements and fast pace of 2023 (and yes we had booked the basement bar, which turned out to be called ‘Sweatshop’!). The consensus was that this event was highly valuable for building connections, generating creative ideas for how we can work better together, and providing a celebratory circuit breaker with colleagues. And it was great to see so many people smiling and mixing – and staying on after the event officially ended, which was graciously accommodated by the venue in their lovely courtyard. Thank you to all the Victorian members who joined us. The Vic Chapter Committee is now planning for 2024. We’re keen to create a program of events that meets the needs of Melburnians and those in regional and rural areas. Look out for our survey, coming soon to your email inbox.
Since our last Up in ARMS update, we’ve welcomed two new members to the committee: Dr Wade Moore (CSIRO) and Dr Andrea Christie (RMIT University). The committee is grateful to two dynamic members who recently stepped down when elected to the ARMS Board: Dr Lachlan Doughney (RMIT University), for his two terms on the committee and outstanding work as treasurer, and Sharon Aburn (Monash University), for her excellent work as Acting Co-Convenor. The committee will soon be seeking expressions of interest for new members: stay tuned for the call out. |

RESEARCH IMPACT SIG: FEBRUARY NETWORKING SESSION |
The ARMS Research Impact Special Interest Group (RI-SIG) will continue its monthly networking sessions in 2024, held on the last Thursday of each month from 12-1pm AEDT/AEST. These sessions offer a chance to discuss current research impact issues and opportunities. This year, we'll mix it up with guest speaker sessions and open informal conversations based on various topics, encouraging our community to connect and share ideas. |
The theme for the initial informal discussion session of the year is 'Sowing the research impact seeds - balancing priorities when impact isn't the sole focus.'
As we resume our responsibilities following (hopefully) rejuvenating breaks and define priorities for the year, for some of our roles research impact is only one part and others it's the main game. In this informal discussion, we aim to exchange ideas and explore strategies that facilitate success in research impact professional practice - whether through cultivating networks within our organisations or adopting practices and solutions for improved outcomes. Please join us with ideas and questions to share for an engaging discussion.
Date: Thursday, 29th February 2024 Time: 12PM - 1PM AEDT |
We look forward to you joining us,
Faith & Catherine (RI-SIG Co-Convenors) |
