PRESIDENT'S UPDATE April - May 2021
A core ethos of ARMS is collaboration. This is obvious and inherent in the open sharing of knowledge and ideas between members and also in the way that the society operates. Over recent years, we have deliberately partnered with like-minded organisations to identify areas of shared interest and then worked together to develop and co-deliver opportunities for ARMS members to meet their professional development needs.
Last month we announced a great example of this in the upcoming event jointly hosted with the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This inaugural two day workshop will explore how Research Offices and Advancement Offices can ever more effectively work together to increase research funding for our institutions. Similar activities that will enable members to grow their expertise and networks are currently in development with other peak bodies – watch this space for announcements in the coming weeks.
Looking beyond Australasia, research management professionals across the globe share many challenges and also bring new ideas about how to deliver our services. As you will be aware, ARMS is a member of INORMS, the International network of Research Management Societies – a global network of societies that each support national cohort of our peers. As a member of the INORMS Council, in recent months I have been involved in a project to identify mechanisms for how best practice in Research Management and Administration (RMA) could be shared in an affordable manner across the world by our respective memberships. This has resulted in the INORMS Sister Association Reciprocal Benefit Scheme (ISARBS) which will be formally launched at the INORMS Conference in late May. This new initiative allows participating members of the INORMS community to benefit from discounted rates on certain events, publications and other products offered by other associations in the INORMS community. An underpinning principle of ISARBS is that members of participating INORMS associations (such as yourself!) pay the same rates as those paid by the vending association’s own members.
Of course, the collaboration exhibited by members of ARMS goes beyond learning from one another. It is demonstrated by the willingness of the ARMS community to commit their individuals time and expertise to help the Society and other members by volunteering to be representatives on Committees, by taking on the role of training fellows, by sharing insights and leading discussion through presenting at conferences or PD @ Zoom sessions. These and many other activities are vital to the development and strength of the profession, and the impact that we can each deliver.
Thank you to all of you who put yourselves forward to support the society to support its members. As we tackle the unknown challenges of the future, this strength through collaboration will be a key enabler of our collective success.
Dr Ross McLennan
ARMS President

What words would you use to best describe research management? Adding-value, enabling, enhancing, empowering. Research managers are the icing on top of a research-flavoured cupcake – we just make everything that little bit better!
What do you find most rewarding and most challenging about working in research management? Most rewarding – seeing our researchers make a difference in the real world – however small a part I had to play, I helped make that happen. Most challenging – getting researchers to stick to deadlines!
Funniest ARMS conference experience? Perhaps not the funniest, but I did appreciate all my lovely ARMS colleagues making me feel like I was part of the conference for ARMS Adelaide 2019 when I couldn’t attend last minute due to pregnancy complications. Along with the excellent twitter commentary, I received a heap of selfies from the University of Auckland and Emerald Global table at midnight which has given me significant material that I can’t wait to dig out for future conferences!
