NEWSLETTER OF ARMS
February - March 2022
Welcome to our latest edition of Up in ARMS,
I'm writing this report on the train as I commute to work. This is symbolic (not my actual train journey) in that it representative of a return to a different sort of normal that many workplaces are now dealing with. I also heard this morning that New Zealand will be soon opening up its international borders, which is fabulous news.
For many of us (and I am counting myself in that group), it’s going to take some time transitioning back to this new way of working. While there may have been initial reluctance to work at home (almost two years ago exactly for many of us), we’ve become used to it (as have our pets) even if it wasn't (and still isn’t perfect).
We have to all re-acquaint ourselves with working with others in real life. While we may have forgotten and are now remembering how noisy it can be and feel that we’ve lost some productivity, let’s not forget the power of the human connection. Let’s take the time to re-establish or create relationships outside of the Zoom/ Teams meeting. I’m looking forward to a morning tea today! Please post images of yourselves reconnecting on the ARMS socials.
Let’s also remember to re-connect outside our organisations. This is where the value of your local ARMS Chapter will be coming to the fore. Over the next few months you will be hearing from your local Chapters about events and activities to re-connect. Please join in those activities as we want an active and interactive community.
At the same time, let’s remember to stay Covid-safe. As new variants evolve as part of viral evolution, we must continue to look after ourselves and others by getting vaccinated if you are able to and maintaining appropriate protocols in higher density environments. (Thank you to our research community).
On a different note, there is so much going on across our member jurisdictions. Over the next few Up in ARMS, we will provide a country update across Australia, NZ, and Singapore.
...And speaking of internationalisation more broadly, unfortunately we were not successful in our bid to host the INORMS 2025 Congress with MyRMA (Malaysian Association). We had brought together a fabulous team and proposal, but it was our EARMA (European Association) that won the INORMS Council over with their proposal to host the event in Madrid, Spain. I am sure you will agree that Madrid is a culturally enriching location to host the Congress and that our EARMA colleagues will deliver an engaging program. We encourage you to attend!
I am also at my station to get off the train so time to get into the day to day business of research management.
Yours in ARMS,
Dr Tania Bezzobs
ARMS President

NZ CHAPTER: MEET THE COMMITTEE
Following the recent call for expressions of interest to join the NZ Pacific Chapter Committee, we are pleased and excited to announce five new members to the Committee! Welcome to: Caroline Pratt, Lesley Brook, Maria Gomez-Lozano, Melissa Climo and Sharon Jensen. It’s great to see the range of backgrounds, experience and enthusiasm the new committee members bring with them. Introductions to your new Chapter Committee members are included below.
Caroline Pratt, Antarctic Science Platform Manager, Antarctica NZ
Caroline has been an ARMS member since 1999. She has more than 25 years Research Management experience (in NZ university, CRI, private research provider and government agency environments) and in 2017, was the first New Zealander to gain ARMS Advanced-Level Accreditation. She is also the only New Zealander to have gained dual recognition at both Foundation and Advanced-level. She has upheld the ARMS brand and values throughout her career (including as the NZ / Pacific Chapter Convenor in 2011 / 12), and has participated in many transitions that the Society has undergone, as key steps in its maturation. Throughout, she has advocated for the importance of gaining professional recognition for Research Managers, and as an enabler of research success, Caroline plans to make further contributions to strengthen research outcomes. She was awarded Fellow of ARMS in 2020 and is currently the Antarctic Science Platform Manager at Antarctica New Zealand.
Lesley Brook, Research Projects Coordinator, Otago Polytechnic
Lesley works in the Research and Postgraduate Directorate at Otago Polytechnic, now a subsidiary of the new institution Te Pūkenga. Her research interests are in achieving and evaluating research impact, and she has recently completed a Master of Professional Practice evaluating the emotional impact of an exhibition of contemporary environmental artworks. Lesley came to research management after a career in legal practice.
Maria Gomez-Lozano, Research Development Advisor, Massey University
Trained in chemical engineering and biotechnology, Maria holds a PhD in molecular biology from the Technical University of Denmark. Maria currently works as the research Development Advisor for health research projects at Massey University. Prior to joining Massey, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry both in the development of pre-clinical research as well as in post-marketing clinical research management.
Melissa Climo, Research Manager, Bridger Consulting Ltd
Melissa has spent most of her research management career in the Land of Bidding – navigating funding systems, designing research, engaging with stakeholders, and wrangling with submission portals and PIs as deadlines rapidly approach. She was once a research chemist, and started her working life at CSIRO Australia, until she encountered commercialisation while working at a UK University. This led her into business development and then, following a move to Aotearoa New Zealand, her discovery of research management. Over two decades, she has spanned pre- and post-award processes, including negotiating contracts, designing research management systems for large, multi-institutional programmes, and dabbling (quite a lot!) in science communication. She is currently self-employed, with allows her to do all these fun things, while working for, and with, universities, Crown Research Institutes and government agencies.
Sharon Jensen, Senior Funding Advisor, AgResearch
Sharon is a Senior Funding Advisor at AgResearch Ltd, a NZ Crown Research Institute. She has worked in this Research Office in a number of roles for 5 years. Prior employment included 2 years with Research and Enterprise, University of Otago in a business support role, and 7 years at the University of Canterbury providing Office Management support in Education (professional development for teachers). Sharon has been a member of ARMS since 2017, and is an accredited Prince 2 practitioner
RESEARCH INFORMATION & REPORTING SIG
The RIR SIG recently held a very successful Zoom session on Wednesday, 23 February discussing the Draft ERA 2023 Submission Documents and Preprints Consultations, with over 80 members in attendance. Thank you to all those who participated in the discussion, which focussed on what’s proposed for change from the previous round of ERA. We hope it was helpful to assist institutions with preparing their responses to the ARC consultations.
Those who’d like to keep in touch with others who are involved with ERA/EI may like to consider joining the ‘ERA and EI Discussion Google Group’ (log into Google and search for era-discussion@googlegroups.com to subscribe yourself directly).
RESEARCH FINANCE MANAGERS SIG
It was great to finally welcome the post award team from the NHMRC to present on the funding guidelines in November last year. There are many interpretation of the guidelines, and it was really beneficial to be able to hear directly from the NHMRC. The NHMRC team also gave an overview of the new Sapphire system.
I’m also looking to revamp this group. Numbers were originally really strong, but the sessions focused more on presentations organised by the convener, rather than rich discussion and sharing best practice.
I’m looking to reach out to universities to nominate/encourage the person leading their research finance function to join so that the group doesn’t morph into a training opportunity, but stays true to the SIG principles.
If you would like to nominate a person from your institution, that is in a leadership role in research finance, please let me know, or encourage them to contact me: c.killey@deakin.edu.au
