NEWSLETTER OF ARMS June - July 2022 |

|
| Dear ARMS Friends
Can you believe that we are over halfway through this year already? I know how hard our members work professionally so a shout out to you all! I hope that you are keeping warm and healthy, both mentally and physically. I'm aware that many of our members (or the families and friends) have been affected by one or more of Covid, the flu or other respiratory viruses. As I sat in the chair at my local pharmacy the other day, waiting for my ‘winter booster’ Covid vaccination, I got a little excited about a number of forthcoming activities and initiatives, which I have noted below.

The ARMS Board will have its next meeting on Monday the 25th. This is the first time in three years that the Board has met in-person. We thank UNSW for hosting our meeting at their Kensington Campus. This will be a much longer meeting than the most recent online meetings, and we will take some time to discuss a number of important agenda items. These include: regular review of our financial position, how we can recognise the achievements of our members, Chapter activities and review of the Terms of Reference of all of our Standing Committees – all were out of date so a review is timely. We will also be sending out the proposed revised TOR to you for feedback – watch out for further information.
- I am looking forward to delivering the National Research and Innovation System accreditation module on the 26th of July to 20 staff from the Australian Research Council.
-
We are continuing to advocate for the profession will be having a number of in-person meetings next week in Canberra with key stakeholders including: Australian Research Council, Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment, Universities Australia, National Health and Medical Research Council, and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
-
We also have an ACT Chapter Event on Tuesday 26th July. There will be similar networking events in other Chapters over the coming months.
As mentioned in a previous edition of the newsletter, our newsletter will provide region specific information on the research and innovation sector. This month, we are pleased to feature New Zealand. Please refer to the article below.
It would also be incredibly remiss of me not to mention that there are a number of awards which celebrate the achievements of our members. These are detailed below in the newsletter.
Also, you will have seen that ARMS Conference registrations are now open! Don’t forget to register! |

| NEW ZEALAND R&I SECTOR UPDATE |
Major review of New Zealand’s research system
Aotearoa New Zealand is currently undertaking a major review of its research, science and innovation (RSI) system. The multi-year Te Ara Paerangi – Future Pathways programme was launched by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) in October 2021. The programme aims to start an open and wide-ranging conversation on a range of issues facing the research system, how these issues might be addressed, and how to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
|
|
|
Consultation on the Future Pathways Green Paper resulted in over 900 submissions and a summary of the submissions has been published. A separate report summarising Māori submissions and engagements has also been released. Key themes emerging from submissions include: -
broad support for greater prominence of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) in RSI policies and structures
- an interest in moving to research priorities that focus on national challenges and opportunities
- concern around the nature, availability and longevity of funding
-
interest in workforce issues such as equity, career development, and precarity and mobility
- support for greater connections and collaboration in the system rather than competition across the whole of the RSI system.
The Te Ara Paerangi Future Pathway programme has been described as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the New Zealand RSI sector and position the system for the challenges that lie ahead. More details, including links to the Green Paper and submission summaries can be found here: https://www.mbie.govt.nz/have-your-say/future-pathways/ Te Kei “E tū ki te kei o te waka, kia pakia koe e ngā ngaru o te wā” - Apirana Mahuika
“Stand at the stern of the canoe and feel the spray of the future biting at your face” Te Kei, the first Māori academic career development programme funded by Te Pōkai Tara Universities New Zealand (UNZ) was launched on 8th July 2022.
Te Kei is jointly led by Te Kāhui Amokura (UNZ’s committee of Māori academic leaders) and the human resources directors across Aotearoa New Zealand’s eight universities. It aims to address the long-standing lack of growth within the Māori academic workforce and will contribute to the continuation of the Māori academy, leadership and mātauranga across all universities.
The programme has two primary goals: - To prepare and support Māori early career academics for careers within Aotearoa New Zealand universities.
- To increase Māori leadership and management capability across Aotearoa New Zealand universities.
Guided by mātauranga Māori, Te Kei has been designed by experienced Māori academics to support the professional and personal development of early career academics. More information about Te Kei can be found here: www.tekei.co.nz. |

After much deliberation on whether Perth will be past the worst of the COVID wave, the ARMS WA Chapter had their first face-to-face event in quite a while! On a cold winter’s morning, they met at iconic Kings Park to connect and discuss current challenges in the research management field over a warm cuppa.
|
|
|
The event was well supported by the committee and members of various WA Universities and research related organisations. The committee has also been privileged to gain two additional committee members, Dale Banks from Murdoch University and Liz Przywolnik from Notre Dame, who both attended the event. A very warm welcome to you both! Carla De Gois, WA Chapter Convenor.

| SA CHAPTER: CALL FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS |
The SA Chapter is looking for new members to help with organising local events. Our Chapter Committee has plans for the rest of the year including a networking event and hosting a PD @Zoom session on research integrity.
Recently the Chapter held a combined webinar/face-to-face event with Professor Ray Chan speaking about his journey from clinician researcher to Caring Futures Institute Director (Flinders University). |
|
|
The event also was a chance to discuss how the Chapter can meet the needs of local ARMS Members. A follow-up meeting with local Research Office Directors was a robust discussion about how ARMS can support research management in SA. Great ideas and strong support was the outcome, so stay posted for future networking and education events.
If you are interested in joining the SA Chapter Committee and being part of leadership for research management in SA, then give Kathy Mott a call on 0421 097 113 or email kmott@bigpond.com.
A big thank you to my colleague Louise Townsin from Torrens University for all her support and doing a great job as Convenor over the past few years. Kathy Mott, SA Chapter Convenor. |
