Good morning/ afternoon (wherever you are)!
There is certainly a lot going on at the moment, with the ARMS Conference this week being the absolute highlight. We do have the ARMS pre-Conference networking events in person this Tuesday (tomorrow!). Please upload any pictures into the ARMS socials.
On Wednesday afternoon, we have our Annual General Meeting. On the Agenda will be a resolution to increase our membership fees for implementation from FY2023/2024. If you are a voting member, please attend or submit your proxy form by Monday 5pm (i.e. today). |
|
|
We will also be celebrating the achievements of our members this Thursday at the annual Awards ceremony. As you know, we are planning for this to be our last virtual conference with next year’s conference in Sydney. Our registration portal for next year’s conference will be opening next month, with a number of discounted options for early conference registration.
A few other activities to note: I recently sat in on the Member Services Committee – it was really fabulous to observe such a dedicated and passionate discussion amongst the Chapter Convenors, with many great ideas. Watch this space. Related to this, we will soon be sending our revised Terms of Reference for many of our Standing Committees, Bylaws and Special Interest Groups. We invite you to review when they become available.
Finally, in terms of forthcoming activities, the Directors of Research SIG will be meeting on 16th September in Canberra, with guest speakers from the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council, Department of Education and Universities Australia. As part of its agenda, the Directors will be discussing topics which will form part of a special agenda on international collaboration. I’d also like to congratulate our latest ARM(F) graduates, these are individuals that have completed the ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation Program. See the full list of graduates in this newsletter. Well done! May I leave you with a reminder about celebrations for the upcoming National Research Managers and Administrators Day. Don’t forget to celebrate! It’s about us, and we’re pretty awesome. Yours in ARMS, |

| NEW ZEALAND SECTOR UPDATE
PROGRAMME LAUNCHED TO STRIKE AT THE OBSTACLES THAT BLOCK MĀORI PATHWAYS INTO THE RESEARCH, SCIENCE AND INNOVATION SYSTEM. |
In August 2022 Research, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall announced an investment of $6.5 million over 6 years to accelerate skills and opportunities for Māori researchers, scientists and mātauranga practitioners, through the Kanapu programme. |
|
|
Kanapu - which means lightning or instantaneous glow - will strike at the obstacles that block Māori pathways into the Research, Science and Innovation (RSI) system. Kanapu is a by Māori, for Māori research programme, which aims to grow the numbers of Māori in the sector to address the pressures they face in growing the workforce and ensuring their perspectives and expertise are represented.
Existing professional development and leadership programmes do not address the unique needs and aspirations of the Māori RSI workforce. The RSI system is also fragmented, making it challenging for Māori communities, businesses and organisations to connect with the right people to meet their own research needs and aspirations. Kanapu is designed and led by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) Māori Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE), Kanapu is funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to connect and nurture a diverse puna (pool) of Māori talent in the wider RSI system and expand the impact of Vision Mātauranga. THE FUTURE IS OPEN: INTERN REPORT ON OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING IN AOTEAROA
Through the intern program within the Office of Chief Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, Tom Saunders recently wrote a report on Open Access.
Having impact is why many people pursue careers in academia to begin with they want their research to be used. To have maximum impact and deliver maximum benefit to Aotearoa New Zealand and the world, our research should be freely available to all.
Tom says, it’s a moral issue – “if the public are funding research, then they should be able to access the results.” At the heart of it, a quest to enhance research impact and transparency is what fuels Tom’s passion for the Open Access kaupapa.
