Dear Colleagues,
Our research management community is made up of members from Australia, New Zealand and Singapore as well as other countries, and from many parts of the research management sector. We’re diverse, but we all have a common goal – to help make research in all its forms happen and to support its evaluation, publication, translation, commercialisation, communication and awareness of its importance. I have probably forgotten a few other ‘tions’ as well!
|
|
|
We are coming into the home straight of what has been a really challenging year for all of us, no matter what we do in support of research. We’re still dealing with Covid, not to mention all of the other garden-variety viruses that have re-emerged now that we’re all mixing more. We’re playing catch-up on all of the stuff we haven’t done, as well as trying to still deal with all of the stuff that is still happening, not to mention trying to plan for next year. Phew! No wonder we’re all a wee bit exhausted.
There’s a lot going on still in ARMS-land – have a look at the rest of the newsletter below. I’d really like to call out the ARMS sponsored NZ get together – I look forward to hearing about many more activities in 2023. Please look after yourselves and your colleagues. And take some time out for a bit of fun, whether that is an ARMS end of year function or something else. Yours in ARMS |

INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION OF RESEARCH MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS 2022
COMPETITION RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED Congratulations to Edith Cowan University (ECU) as the recipient of the ARMS annual International Research Administrators Day competition! EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY Submitted by Professor Margaret Jones, Director Research Services |
Edith Cowan University (ECU) celebrated International Research Managers and Administrators Day by bringing together many of the different university teams who contribute to improving our research endeavours. Gathering over lunch, we caught up with colleagues, many of whom we hadn’t seen in person for literally years, and introduced the new faces in our teams. By coming together in this way, we felt part of the growing profession of like-minded educated and capable people enabling global research excellence by facilitating the link between research activities and research outcomes.
Colleagues who attended the event included the DVCR and her team, our valiant and tireless Associate Deans Research (ADRs), Research Services, Legal, Finance, the Library, Digital and Campus Services, Data Governance, Strategic Governance, Communications, Records, Research Committees, Commercialisation, Student Administration, Research Ethics Committees, International, Human Resources and the office of the Dean, Graduate Research. A mighty 55 people in all.
To provide a flavour of our focus and conversations, please see an excerpt from the welcome speech from the Director, Research Services, Professor Margaret Jones:
At ECU I am proud of the research support ecosystem that we have built together. Research Services as a team, and the support we provide to the research community, is enriched through our strong connections with other areas in ECU. You are all here today because you are integral to the delivery of best practice support services to our researchers. I see our community of practice as the strong research backbone of ECU, headed up by Caroline as DVCR, and we provide that strong framework upon which researchers are able to build and amplify their careers. We walk their research journeys with them, from grant submission stage to celebration of success; to project management and its many components; to capturing their research outputs and promoting their stories and impact; to navigating processes, policies and the hiccups along the way. Previously I had thought our mantra was Communication, communication, communication. But I think that in Research Management, it is Relationships, relationships, relationships. For our team, it is relationships with the researchers, with the funding bodies, with external and internal stakeholders such as yourselves. And I greatly value the relationships we have with all of you and your teams. We could not deliver the great work we do, without you.
I would like to recognise the hard work, dedication and commitment that you all have to supporting and improving the research endeavours at ECU.
The Director then recognised each of the teams and the ways in which we all work together.
Such was the positivity and collegiality felt by all who attended this celebration that the DVCR, Professor Caroline Finch, declared we shall hold this event every year! A thank you note from one of our new lawyers sums up the many positive comments received during and after the event: ‘I just wanted to say thank you for holding the Research lunch yesterday and extending the invitation to me. As someone who is new to ECU, it was a genuine pleasure to celebrate this recognition with your teams, and witness first-hand the amazing collegiality and heartfelt leadership in this area of the University.’
We share photos of the people who attended the event, noting which areas of the university they work within, or their role.

A special thanks to the University of Newcastle for also submitting an entry. |

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE Submitted by Jodi Mclean, Chief Operating Officer, SOIL |
Thank you to the University of Newcastle for sharing how they spend International Research Administrators Day!
As a hard-working and dedicated research administration team employed by a research delivery agency, we are the engine room behind project priorities ideation, project calls, submissions, assessments, contracting, funding distribution, project monitoring, communicating, and reporting to all stakeholders, to ensure that the delivery of promised research outputs has the best chance of success. Like the research teams conducting the research, we are very passionate about our industry and want to help contribute towards creating major positive and long-lasting impacts.
We held a ‘Potluck’ themed lunch together outside to celebrate Research Administration Day 2022. Just as research benefits greatly from collaborative efforts, by us all bringing something along to share made for a wonderful lunch experience for us all, including a cake! |

HOT TOPIC WEBINAR: REDUCING RESEARCH BUREAUCRACY; LESSONS FROM THE UK If bureaucracy is limiting the progress, quality, or impact of publicly funded research, then public money is being wasted…. Researchers must feel empowered and supported by administrative infrastructure rather than constrained or disheartened by it.’
These words are from the introduction to the UK Government’s recently published final report of the Independent Review of Research Bureaucracy, to identify ways to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy in all parts of the research system. |
|
|
This is clearly also a growing concern among Australian research administrators, who are constantly challenged to reduce "burden" on academics. And we are at a critical point, with the ARC’s ERA Transition Working Group due to deliver its transition plan by December 2022.
Worktribe won the prestigious UCISA Outstanding Corporate Member Award this year and we pride ourselves on our intuitive, easy to use software built "with" the sector and so demonstrating best practice solutions. We make life simple and straightforward for administrators and researchers.
Join us at the next ARMS Hot Topic Webinar to hear the Worktribe perspective and also the observations of the session presenters. Sponsored & Presented by: |

ARMS SPONSORED EVENT: URONZ 2022 BREAKFAST |
The New Zealand and Pacific Islands Chapter were able to meet and come together whilst attending the University Research Offices of New Zealand (URONZ) conference held in Ōtautahi Christchurch. It was an opportunity to re-introduce the chapter committee and network, with not only university research managers/administrators but also our colleagues within our Crown Research Institutes and Te Pūkenga, newly formed organisation housing New Zealand’s Polytechnics and Institutes of Technology.
Despite the early start of 7:30am the night after the conference dinner, the enticement of a cooked hot breakfast (with bacon, hashbrowns and eggs) was too hard to resist for some of our members. The breakfast allowed the committee to seek input from our members on what they wanted to see from the chapter over the coming months. But also, ideas on how we could reconnect as a community despite our geographical locations. URONZ was a great chance for us as a community to reconnect and we would like to thank the organising committee for their support. A huge thank you to the ARMS team for organising the most important component of an event the kai (food). A big thanks to the members and the chapter committee for turning up very early and contributing to the korero (talk). As always if you are a member of the New Zealand and Pacific Island chapter and have some ideas on what you would like to see happen feel free to email the ARMS team on ARMSMembership@researchmanagement.org.au and they will get in touch with us.

| SA CHAPTER: UPDATE FROM THE CONVENOR |
The SA Chapter recently hosted a PD@Zoom session on research integrity. A terrific panel presented three perspectives on research integrity – from Dr Daniel Barr, a co-author of the ARMS/AAMRI Workbook on Research Integrity, Rebekah O’Shea a senior research integrity officer, and Associate Professor Odette Pearson, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researcher. The panel helped attendees to work through the complexity of rules and considerations for conducting and monitoring research with integrity. The session can be viewed online for those who missed it.
