NEWSLETTER OF ARMS May - June 2023 |
|
|
|
Dear ARMS-enthusiasts, It’s May already! What a start to the year it has been!
I know how busy everyone has been helping research happen. In ARMS-land, there has also been a lot happening.
We are seeing a return to many in real-life events and activities which is excellent. You really can’t beat the buzz in the room and the opportunity to mix and mingle. |
|
|
The Australasian Ethics Network conference is on next week – if you haven’t registered, then you can still do so (see more info below).
And later in the year, as you know we are holding our ARMS Sydney Conference. It has been fabulous to receive over 100 abstracts for this event. These are being assessed currently and expect to have a final program out shortly. Check out opportunities available to get you there (closing 8 May)!
Prior to ARMS conference is the INORMS conference in Durban, South Africa. If you’re attending, please let the ARMS office know. I’ll be on a plane flying out from Melbourne and am pretty sure that this will be a flight with quite a few of you on it.
Our Chapters and Special Interest Groups are really ramping up their activities, so please take a moment to have a look at the schedules below. A few important announcements:
As advised at the AGM/ SGM last year, the Board is working behind the scenes reviewing the ARMS Constitution. Thanks to those members who provided valuable feedback – we aim to have a revised constitution ready for our AGM later in the year.
We have also been updating many of the ARMS professional development modules as part of their regular review cycle. Thanks to the Accreditation Council who have been hard at work reviewing edits to our module materials and those members who have been commissioned to undertake the reviews.
We are really keen to hear about how you are contributing to our profession and delivering research management impact through our Impact Case Studies. We would like to showcase these at the conference so please considering submitting a case study by 9 June - see article below.
Congratulation to our ARMS Secretary, Kate Swanson, who will be the ARMS representative on the Advisory Committee for the 2024 Quality in Postgraduate Research conference. On that note, don’t forget our Honour Roll where we encourage and invite all ARMS members who have contributed to the Society, no matter how big or small to let us know.
Until next time, yours in ARMS, Dr Tania Bezzobs ARMS President |

| PD SESSIONS @ ZOOM: CONNECTING RESEARCH & POLICY What is the science-policy interface? How can researchers translate their work for a policy audience?
Join our presenters to find out more about navigating the policy-making system to promote uptake of research into policy development. Spoiler Alert: its most effective when researchers establish relationships with people working in policy. |
|
|
The science-policy interface creates an environment where scientific research can be shared with policy makers, who can use it to inform decision-making. But building the links between the two communities is surprisingly difficult. In this session we’ll explore how to link science and policy, and give some examples from Aotearoa New Zealand. We’ll also share some engaging animations and print resources to help scientists prepare briefing documents and foster relationships with those working in policy development.
Date: Wednesday, 31 May 2023 Time: 1PM - 2PM NZST (NZ)
Presenter: Dr Hannah McKercher - Riddet Institute at Massey University, Office of the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor & Dr George Slim - Rhadegund Life Sciences, Office of Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor |

NSW CHAPTER EVENT: INTERNATIONAL PROJECT COLLABORATIONS: BUILDING A RISK AWARENESS CULTURE FOR COUNTERING FOREIGN INTERFERENCE |
On Wednesday 15 March, ARMS NSW Chapter members gathered at the Parramatta City campus of Western Sydney University to attend a special workshop, “International Project Collaborations: Building a Risk Awareness Culture for Countering Foreign Interference”. |
|
|
This excellent hybrid initiative was organised by local ARMS members from WSU, Ms Shaista Kahn, Mr Matthew Hunter, Mr David Cheng and Dr Shantala Mohan, with help from the NSW Chapter Committee and the ARMS Executive Office in Adelaide.
Eighty-five online attendees joined 41 in-person attendees to hear experts speak on the topic of Foreign Interference. Hosted and welcomed to Darug country by Professor Kevin Dunn (Pro Vice Chancellor Research, WSU), a warm welcome was given by the Vice Chancellor and President of WSU, Professor Barney Glover AO. The keynote speaker was Mr Anthony Coles, Deputy Counter Foreign Interference Coordinator in the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Following Mr Coles, we had three panellists presenting shorter talks: Ms Nisha Lad, Director Countering Foreign Interference in the International Division of the Australian Government Department of Education; Professor Clive Baldock, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Development at WSU, and Dr Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice-Chancellor External Engagement, the University of Adelaide.
Panellists and the keynote joined for an hour in a moderated discussion, after which the co-convenors of the NSW Chapter (Ms Tanya Karliychuk and Dr Joseph Toltz) presented the panellists with gifts and reminded participants of upcoming events. Bidding farewell to the 85 online attendees, the remaining 41 attendees and presenters adjourned for lunch and networking.
The day was a great success and bodes well for future NSW ARMS Chapter events – in-person and online.

POST-AWARD RESEARCH MANAGEMENT SIG
The Post-Award Research Management SIG met in earnest for the first time via zoom on Tuesday 4th April. Since establishing the SIG late last year, we now have 41 members on board, from universities and research institutions in Australia and Singapore, and also from our major funding agencies. The ARC have 3 representatives in the group, along with representatives from the NHMRC, and the Victorian Cancer Council. |
|
|
The first piece of work for the group will be to advance some common templates in conjunction with the contracts working group established by the Directors SIG. As part of this, a working group has been established, led by Connie to finalise the shared grant reporting template that was started by the original Research Finance SIG. The working group has representatives from: Monash (Judy Chen), University of Melbourne (Shaun Blacker) UNSW (Ianina Morgenstern) UQ (Ivy Lee), RMIT (Justine Stojanovski), QUT (Alison Vawser), Swinburne (Roleen Sharma), and of course Deakin (Connie Killey). Members of this group may contact their peers across the sector over the next couple of months.
We have growing representation across Australia, with a broad cross section from the Go8, ATN, IRU, however, we are still looking for members from the RUN (CSU, CQU, Federation, SCU, UNE, USQ, and USC). While the work we are currently doing may be more directly relevant to the Australian sector, we are very keen to have representation from New Zealand and increased representation from Singapore, as we hope that the work will translate to all of the ARMS members, and it will be difficult to progress this without representatives from those regions.
For more information, please contact us. Post -Award Research Management SIG Co-convenors, Frank Anastasopoulos and Connie Killey |

| RESEARCH INFORMATION AND REPORTING SIG: EVENT UPDATE |
The RIR SIG recently hosted an international speaker at an online event held on Thursday, 30 March. Professor James Wilsdon, Director of the Research on Research Institute, University College London presented on ‘What next for national research assessments?: Engaging with global approaches to responsible research evaluation’.
|
| |
Professor Wilsdon is a transdisciplinary social scientist and meta-researcher on the governance and management of science and research, and the relationship between evidence and decision-making.For the past decade, he has been centrally involved in research assessment reforms in the UK and Europe, In 2014, he was invited to chair an independent UK government review of research metrics, published as The Metric Tide. He subsequently chaired a European Commission expert group on Next Generation Metrics, and in 2022, with Stephen Curry and Elizabeth Gadd, revisited these debates in Harnessing the Metric Tide.
The session was very well attended, with approximately 70 members registering for the event. The topic was timely given the cancellation of ERA-2023 and EI-2024 and similar debates about national research assessments also occurring in the UK and New Zealand. James reinforced the importance of having research management professionals at the table as a key player in national discussions given we are at the coalface of preparing submission data and have expert insights into the evaluation of research performance. He also shared about many pivotal global policies/developments and provided links to a number of valuable resources.
For those who were unable to attend the session, a recording is available for SIG members via the RIR SIG web page (see Related Resources section). |
