NEWSLETTER OF ARMS
July - August 2023 |
| |
To state the obvious, life and research have a lot in common. They have beginnings and endings and a lot of stuff in between. In every research project, there is the germ of that new idea that can set the stage for the next research project. However, for us as humans, that’s where the similarities end, notwithstanding that some of us have children and loved ones we care for. This makes the passing of people we have shared our lives with, professionally and personally, and even fleetingly, that much more poignant.
Since our last newsletter, I’m personally aware of the passing of three significant leaders in research and research management. |
I am sure that you are also aware of others whom you have worked with. Further, many of you have no doubt had family and friends who have passed.
What’s my point? It’s sad and sometimes tragic when those we know pass, but let’s make sure that we take the time to reflect, and value those moments. And please, make sure that you look after yourselves and others. Between this newsletter and the next will be two important ‘days’ – 1) RUOK Day on 14 September (in Australia); 2) National Research Managers Day – 25 September. We also have our fabulous conference coming up in less than two weeks. Let’s use these times to connect with new and old colleagues and continue that spirit of community, friendship and simply looking out for each other.
Continuing with the spirit of community and re-connection, from 15-17 August I travelled with the inspirational Deputy President, Jaylene Wehipeihana, and the indefatigable ARMS COO, Maria Zollo, on our NZ Roadshow. Three ARMS events were held across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch where in panel sessions with leaders in NZ Research and Research Policy, we discussed the impact of Te Ara Paerangi Future Pathways which provides the pathway for future research, science and innovation systems. The discussions were very engaging and stimulating, and most importantly, Research Management Professionals across NZ universities, crown institutes, independent research institutes and government agencies got together (see more below). Thanks so much to the Chapter Committee (special mention to Melissa Climo who led the Christchurch Event), its Convenors (Katie Jones who led the Auckland event and Simon Lovatt who led the Wellington event) and the local hosts, The University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Canterbury to make this happen. Ngā mihi nui!
As mentioned above, our annual conference is just around the corner. We are so excited about this! I look forward to seeing over 750 of you in person in a few weeks’ time.
Yours in ARMS, |
Dr Tania Bezzobs ARMS President |

| NEW TRUST IN SCIENCE PAPER RELEASED – DR CATHERINE P FOLEY, AUSTRALIA’S CHIEF SCIENTIST |
Australia’s Chief Scientist for Australia, Dr Catherine P Foley has recently published a paper that discusses issues of quality and integrity in science.
The paper addresses the important point that if research is to have impact that benefits society, then trust in science is critical. In a recent communication, Dr Foley said: |
| “I have been concerned that on occasions when contentious issues with a science evidence base are discussed, that the integrity of the research is questioned.
When I looked into this, I found the questions were actually about the quality of research. The issue was not that researchers had made up their research, or that there had been misconduct; rather, the quality of research was being questioned — did the researcher do a good enough job?
Research quality is paramount and yet has few, if any, metrics associated with it. I have since observed that ‘quality’, ‘integrity’, ‘excellence’ and ‘impact’ are often used loosely, by all of us. |
As I have a number of projects underway, including a consideration of the assessment of research — that is, the metrics we use to assess individuals — I have prepared this foundational document to provide clarity on what I refer to when I talk about these issues. I hope you find it as useful as I have. As researchers, we need to be trusted by those our research may impact”. |

| UPCOMING PD SESSION @ ZOOM: SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS RESEARCH AND ENGAGEMENT Aboriginal researchers encounter institutional barriers to Indigenous Australian research, and less experienced non-Indigenous researchers often need more understanding of the measures required to protect Indigenous knowledges in research. Yet, few institutions have taken active steps towards identifying and addressing such challenges. |
This presentation will showcase the collaboration between the Dean of Indigenous Futures and the Research Office at Curtin University in developing research agreement templates suitable for Indigenous Australian research projects. The approach seeks to minimise lengthy delays for those conducting Indigenous research through pre-determined clauses within the agreement templates. This approach enhances principles of Indigenous involvement in University governance, builds upon the University’s commitment to reconciliation, and recognises that bespoke contractual agreements are more suited for the needs of Aboriginal researchers and projects.
Date: October 18, 2023 Time: 12pm - 1pm AEDT Presenter: Ms Mandy Downing, Curtin University & Mr Peter Rogers, Curtin University |
PD SESSION @ ZOOM: FROM CONCEPT TO CONTRACT - RESEARCH CONTRACTS WITH INDUSTRY: RELATIONSHIP MECHANISM OT LEGAL TANGLE We extend our gratitude to Dr Helen Barrie, Jeff Kasparian, and Anastasia Apostol for presenting our August PD Session @ Zoom!

CHAPTER & SIG UPDATES/EVENTS |
| NZ/PACIFIC CHAPTER UPDATES |
After organising well-attended PD@Zoom webinars in January, March and May, the focus of the NZ/Pacific Islands chapter in August was three in-person events on 15, 16 and 17 August respectively, in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which attracted a pleasing 70, 25 and 26 attendees respectively. Each event included a panel discussion on the Te Ara Paerangi / Future Pathways initiative to reform the New Zealand publicly-funded research system, a presentation from ARMS President Dr Tania Bezzobs and networking with fellow research managers over nibbles and refreshments.
As well as being valuable learning and networking opportunities for ARMS members, these events attracted several new members to ARMS and provided great opportunities for research managers to see how they could contribute to making Te Ara Paerangi a success.
The chapter committee would like to thank the Universities of Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury for hosting, and all the panel members and attendees for their enthusiastic participation - especially Dr Prue Williams and Dr Danette Olsen of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment, Dr Tania Bezzobs, ARMS COO Maria Zollo and ARMS Deputy President Jaylene Wehipeihana.
For the rest of 2023, the chapter committee plans to hold another one or two PD@Zoom sessions, support an in-person roadshow by Dr Hannah McKerchar and Dr George Slim of the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor's office on connecting research and policy, and to hopefully hold one or two more in-person networking events.
The chapter committee would welcome suggestions for webinar topics in late-2023 and early 2024 from NZ/Pacific Island chapter members. Please e-mail convenor Simon Lovatt (simon.lovatt@waikato.ac.nz) with any suggestions you may have for topics and/or presenters. |

Faith Welch will talk through some key principles from her chapter in the book The Impactful Academic discussing how researchers can plan their career for impact. We’ll then open up the discussion to share ideas on how to support ECRs. We hope to see lots of you there! |
