NEWSLETTER OF ARMS MARCH - APRIL 2024 |
|
|
|
Dear Colleagues,
I hope that this newsletter finds you well. I remain amazed that we are almost past a third of the year. I know that these have been busy and sometimes challenging times for many of us, in the context of world events plus our own local and personal happenings. It has been a time of reflection and faith for many in our society, and most recently in Australia and New Zealand with ANZAC Day (25 April), which is a time of remembrance for those who have served and died in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Sadly, we are adding to the numbers to remember with the present-day conflicts.
|
|
|
In many respects, we remain helpless as these global and sometimes local tragedies arise. But let’s make sure that we show and share compassion, tolerance, empathy and hope as much as we can in our own personal and professional engagements. On a more upbeat note, here are some of the really exciting things that are a-happening at the moment: -
ARMS Darwin Conference arrangements are ramping up. Our recent call for abstracts closed on the 12th of April and we were overwhelmed with the interest received (161 abstracts compared to 107 the same time last year!!). We expect to release a draft conference program late next month. Watch the website for full details.
-
The ARMS Board will be meeting on Friday the 3rd of May at RMIT University, Melbourne for a day to discuss planning for the next iteration of our Strategic Plan. Updates will be provided to our membership over the coming weeks.
-
The Directors of Research SIG Meeting was held on the 5th of April where we heard from our New Zealand colleagues about their insights regarding the introduction of short draft applications for major funding rounds and what they had done operationally to prepare for this change. ARMS also recently surveyed Australian university Research Offices about the ARC DP25EI round. I’ll be preparing some more information very soon (look on our LinkedIn socials), but here are a few snippets of information:
- Of the 31 universities who responded, they reported a 185% increase in the number of DP25EIs submitted relative to the number of DP24 full applications submitted.
- ~52% considered the workload manageable, 32% excessive and the remainder in line with previous.
-
I am really excited to see the relaunch of the Research Funders SIG – refer to article below. A special thanks to Jade Hurst and Tanya Karliychuk for taking on the role of coordinating this SIG.
- Congratulations to our latest recipients for our new awards – Early Career Research Management Program and our Indigenous/First Nations Conference Travel award – refer to article below.
- We are after for members of our Social Media Advisory Committee. Please see below for more information.
-
Next month the Singapore Chapter will be hosting a Symposium addressing the current challenges faced by Research Management Professionals in 2024. I will be presenting at this event and will also be meeting with key stakeholders in the region including: The National Research Foundation, The National University of Singapore; A*Star, Singapore Institute of Technology, the National University Health System; Geriatric Research Institute; Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University.
Don’t forget to look below for more jam-packed news! And finally, a very warm welcome to the newest member of the Executive Office team, Janice Yau. Yours in ARMS, |
Dr Tania Bezzobs ARMS President |

ARDC RELEASE OF THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL PERSISTENT IDENTIFIER (PID) STRATEGY UPDATE |
The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) has released the Australian National Persistent Identifier (PID) Strategy, which will help with the adoption of PIDs to identify and connect entities in Australia’s research and innovation ecosystem for greater, faster impact. The development of the Strategy has been informed by an open, nation-wide consultation process throughout 2023 and guided by a National PID Strategy Taskforce comprised of senior stakeholders with Dr Semira Dautovic from Macquarie University representing ARMS.
|
|
|
There is growing momentum nationally and internationally to better leverage data stemming from research and about research and to harness the potential offered by PIDs such as ORCID and DOI. Many countries, including the UK and Canada, have begun developing a national approach to PIDs to underpin their research and innovation ecosystems. it will support a number of areas in the recently released Australian Universities Accord.
The Strategy will be enabled by a collaboratively developed national roadmap, which will be regularly refreshed and extended. The Roadmap is a co-design process in which stakeholders will be invited to develop and collaborate on action plans that advance the PIDs agenda. Stay informed and find out how to engage with the Roadmap development by subscribing to the ARDC Connect newsletter.

TAS CHAPTER UPDATE (Q1 2024) |
Greetings ARMS Community, as we traverse the lush landscapes of Tasmania and soak in the crisp air of innovation, it’s time to pause and reflect on the bustling activity within our ARMS Tasmanian Chapter during the first quarter of 2024.
Led by the dynamic duo of Mr Edward Benyon and Dr Olu Odeyemi, our ARMS TAS Chapter Committee has been forging ahead with vigour. |

In the realm of online enlightenment, Dr. Olumide Odeyemi captivated us with an illuminating discourse on the "Impacts of unsuccessful research funding on Australian Researchers”. Dr. Odeyemi's expertise, akin to Tasmania's rugged beauty, left us inspired and eager for more. His presentation delved deep into the intricacies of research funding outcomes, shedding light on the challenges faced by Australian researchers and the imperative to support their wellbeing and productivity.

FROM OUR CORPORATE PARTNERS |
|
|
| RESEARCH MANAGEMENT AND DATA MAKE A PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIP
Making sure our users get the technology that will empower them to work faster, better, or with fewer resources is always our goal at ResearchMaster. But with the recent publication of the final report from the Universities Accord committee, it seems increasingly likely that automated, data-driven reporting will play an even more significant role in research administration going forward. |
|
|
That means that, from HDR project reviews and examinations through to costing and pricing or reports relating to key grant schemes, the future of research management will demand equal access to data. Data democratisation is the process of giving non-technical staff the ability to access and use data in their day-to-day work. It’s been at the front of the collective minds here at ResearchMaster.
We’ve been hearing from our own clients that they’re seeking more equitable access to data so they can avert the bottlenecks caused by demand for specific, technical skills. In response, we’ve been coming up with ways to expand secure but equitable access to data, to make sure all kinds of staff can get access to the reports and information they need for their daily operations. To do that, we’re streamlining how ResearchMaster users can use the critical information in eForms to build reports, which will support an increasingly data-driven approach to research administration.
The RM team is looking forward to the democratised future, and we can’t wait to share it with you. You can keep up with news via our website, or contact us for more information about ResearchMaster. |
