NEWSLETTER OF ARMS MAY - JUNE 2024 |

Dear ARMS members, Well, we have officially ticked over half of 2024! I am sure that it has been a busy year for every member of the Society.
Recently, I attended an Open Research Forum in Canberra hosted by the Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. This was a fabulous example of research in action and of relevance to the broader research community and our profession - the forum was led by members of an Australian Research Council funded project “Producing, Owning and Managing Knowledge in the 21st Century”. I encourage you to find out more at their project website here.

I’m incredibly excited about our forthcoming Annual ARMS conference in Darwin. The program is now available and covers a variety of topics to suit the diverse needs and interests of our profession. We have recently clicked over more than 500 registrations, and there is still time to register- see article below. Check out the variety or interesting workshops, masterclass and our foundation module on Navigating Agreements available to delegates the day before the conference. Please visit the conference website for full details.
Very importantly, the nominations for the ARMS Board are now open and close 26 July - refer to article below. ARMS has so many ways to make a contribution to our Society, including the Board positions. I have found my time serving as a Board member and as President very gratifying – it has provided me with an opportunity to make a difference to ARMS at the strategic level working with many members across committees, special interest groups and other fora. I have also worked with some amazing and inspiring colleagues – so why not think about making your contribution, especially as we move into the next Strategic Plan for ARMS. Please note that up for election is the role of President-Elect (i.e. the next President), which will commence after this year’s AGM with the elected person becoming President from the date of 2025 AGM.
The Board will also be meeting on the 31st of July to review the draft Strategic Plan prepared by our external facilitator. The Strategic Plan is expected to be released in late November/ early December 2024.
Please also make a diary note - our Annual General Meeting will this year be held online to make it accessible to all ARMS members. The AGM is scheduled for Wednesday the 18th of September from 12 Noon - 1 PM AEST.
Two final bits of news from me: - Research Managers/ Administrators Day is 25 September – Please don’t forget to celebrate!
- We are calling for nominations for two of our most senior award/ recognition categories – the Janet Dibb-Leigh Award and Fellows of ARMS. If you know of anyone who has made significant contributions and is committed to the profession of research management in all of its forms, or indeed you are such a person, please consider applying as per the details below. This is one way we can recognise and honour those inspiring people. Until next time, yours in ARMS, |
Dr Tania Bezzobs ARMS President |

NZ CHAPTER SUMMARY: FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR THE NZ RESEARCH SYSTEM - THE SCIENCE SYSTEM ADVISORY GROUP AND MORE |

QLD, NT & PNG CHAPTER SUMMARY: DARWIN NETWORKING EVENT |
QLD, NT & PNG chapter members who attended the networking event went home with happy hearts. Many appreciated the new venue as we had it all to ourselves and our laughter, like music, filled the room. It was good to see such a connection among the group as they share their experiences and realising how each one plays a vital role in the efficient management of research projects.
A few who attended for the first time said they especially enjoyed meeting with members from other departments, such as the Library, Faculty of Science and Technology, and the amazing one-woman team from Research Office of Batchelor Institute. The highlight of the event is having a new member, special mention to Indira Jones, who just joined the Research Office and registered for ARMS. |
| SA CHAPTER EVENT SUMMARY: "SERVING UP RESEARCH MANAGEMENT I.C.E - INTEGRITY, COMPLIANCE & ETHICS!" |
On May 24th, SA chapter members gathered at The Golden Wattle to hear a panel of experienced research professionals speak on all things research integrity, compliance, and ethics. Panellists Hendryk Flaegel, A/Prof David Foster, and Rebekah O’Shea deliberated on what a national office for research integrity might look like - whether it should be responsible for investigations, or rather comprise an advisory body providing central guidance to institutions, and the limitations associated with either model.
Among other topics discussed included the challenges of ensuring that both researchers and research professionals are provided with the specialised skills and knowledge to successfully navigate integrity and ethics; how to provide better quality ethics and integrity training; and whether research managers in diverse fields have the confidence to identify and initiate conversations about research integrity. Finally, the panel explored emerging issues in research integrity, such as the subjectiveness of what people accept to be “appropriate” use of generative AI in research and higher education, and the evolving importance of thesis examination and defence.
The ARMS SA Chapter thanks our speakers and all those who attended for an enjoyable and thought-provoking event. As a reminder, ARMS has a free “Practical Guide for Research Integrity Advisors” - this is targeted at Research Integrity Advisors, but does provide insight into how to help others with research integrity conversations. This can be accessed via the Resources tab by logging into your ARMS account. We look forward to seeing you at future ARMS events! |

TAS CHAPTER EVENT SUMMARY: COME WALK WITH US – ABORIGINAL CULTURAL SAFETY TRAINING |
Our Chapter training for this winter season was held in nipaluna Hobart. We were guided by Associate Professor Clair Andersen through a hands-on workshop that showed the impact of past invasion and dispossession events on the current and future outcomes for Aboriginal Tasmanians. Through immersive activities and group discussions we experienced new perspectives on the historical events, and gained cross-cultural skills and understandings with which to integrate Aboriginal issues across our research administration endeavours.
We continued the conversation over afternoon tea following the formal activities. We discussed how the training can guide our roles in relation to Indigenous researchers and Indigenous research. The workshop was highly engaging and informative. Feedback on the session from one ARMS member “It was an excellent session and I highly recommend it.”. |

FROM OUR CORPORATE PARTNERS |
| RESEARCH AND DATA: A POWERFUL COLLABORATION
Make ResearchMaster Enterprise a partner to your collaboration We know researchers do their best work when they work together.
Whether it’s intra-team, multidisciplinary, between research organisations or engaging with industry and government partners, collaboration is vital to modern research. |
However, even inside the research infrastructure of a university, information is often still siloed in disparate systems, and there is often a confusing mix of different nonstandard technologies in place, which hinders research office processes and effective data governance. As we conduct more research that bridges disciplines, sectors, or indeed international borders, the process of enabling that collaboration attains greater significance. From the perspective of research management, that means integrating data sources, standardising process and, ultimately, dissolving those silos.
ResearchMaster is an effective tool in the research management arsenal for breaking down those silos. As the most comprehensive research management solution in the APAC market, it reduces the numbers of licences and applications required across teams and assists with standardising processes, data formats and data collection via easily replicable eForms. The ResearchMaster team is a proud and long-term sponsor of the ARMS. This year’s ARMS Conference will take place in sunny Darwin, and, as always, we’re looking forward to it and we very much hope to see you there.
Please come by our booth, sign up for our workshops and demos ahead of time and talk to us about how ResearchMaster Enterprise: - collates research data for your needs, - supports important costing and pricing functions, - integrates research office and research ethics teams seamlessly, - RME eForms support your workflows and data collection requirements.
If you have any questions about how ResearchMaster can empower collaboration in your team, or you would like to see a demonstration, please reach out to 03 9320 9003 or info@researchmaster.com.au or https://researchmaster.com.au/contact-us/. |
