PD Sessions @ Zoom #10: Paradox, dilemma & uncertainty: Shaping an ‘academic me’ in a performance-driven research world
PD Sessions @ Zoom:
Paradox, dilemma & uncertainty: Shaping an ‘academic me’ in a performance-driven research world
Thurday 22nd October 12PM - 1PM AEDT
Presenters: Joanna Cobley (PhD), Researcher Development Coordinator | Kaitautoko Kairangaha, Research & Innovation, University of Canterbury
This talk reconsiders how individuals, and by proxy groups and a regional university, re-sets their ‘academic identity’ within a context of extreme uncertainty and rapid change. Using ethnographic research methods and taking a narrative approach, I reflect on how national assessment frameworks (e.g. Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF)) and ranking exercises (eg QS, THE SIGs) creates opportunities to drive researcher development.
The influence of national assessment frameworks and ranking exercises on research cultures raises a certain dilemma, as did my experience navigating internal obstacles in the quest to embed preparation for the next PBRF round as business as usual. Anecdotal evidence reveals a deep paradox concerning perceived tensions between maintaining researcher autonomy and the significant role that serendipity plays in the research life cycle balanced against the requirement to perform well within the next national research assessment framework. In addition, the PBRF review combined with the unprecedented financial shock due to COVID-19 has amplified uncertainty about the relationship between research assessment outcomes and impacts on individuals, groups and universities both now and in the future. No matter the research environment however, gauging how researcher development develops researchers is critical. These scenarios will resonate with anyone involved in re-setting the academic identity of individuals and groups at their university.
