PD Sessions @ Zoom

Researchers and research managers are increasingly embracing artificial intelligence (AI) models to enhance scientific discovery, streamline processes and increase their productivity. But like any new tool, AI has also brought with it a new set of challenges: these include a lack of transparency about when AI systems are being used, and ethical challenges from AI use that may cause or amplify research integrity issues. How can research managers be better equipped to manage these challenges at our institutions, ensuring that the adoption of AI is done in a responsible and safe manner?

At the National AI Centre, we have partnered with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources to produce best-practice guidance for industry looking to adopt AI responsibly. This is a “single source of truth” for Australian businesses looking to develop, adopt or procure AI, and it complements work to create a similar framework for government use of AI. While these frameworks were not developed for the research sector specifically, there are several transferrable lessons that research institutions can take from them. This presentation will discuss some of the potential benefits and risks of AI use within research institutions, and cover how research managers can play a role in developing organisational governance and policies to ensure responsible use of AI within their institution.
