PD Sessions @ Zoom: Navigating Risky Waters – Development of a Contract Risk Tool to identify and mitigate research risk

PD Sessions @ Zoom

The risks we face as a sector are constantly evolving, from cybersecurity, to foreign interference, data protection and many more – the sources of risks to our institutions seem endless. To meet this challenge at the University of Sydney, we assembled a working group of subject matter experts to design and implement a Contract Risk Tool. It is our hope that by presenting the tool to the sector, we can share how we are grappling these challenges as well as our learnings.

The tool has two key purposes. Firstly, to increase our Post Award teams’ confidence that we are adequately and consistently assessing a broad spectrum of risks for each research project. Secondly, to provide in-built referral pathways to specialist teams for the development and execution of targeted mitigation strategies. Our tool currently refers matters to our Modern Slavery Unit and our Research Risk and Security team, with the possibility for further expansion and reporting ability. Since implementation of the tool, we have noted an increase in the consistency of risk assessment processes across Post Award and an increase in the number of medium to high risks identified and mitigated per project.
