Pushing on through the pandemic: The challenges, successes and strategies of regional Universities 
Wednesday 28th October 2PM - 3PM AEDT (Please note this PD session is being offered at a later time.)


Presenters: Panel Discussion with Prof Susan Kinnear, Mr Andrew Johnson, A/Prof Jason White and Dr Steve Rogers.
Dr Sarah Wright will facilitate the session.

This panel session will focus on the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic on Australian regional universities, and their experiences around creating resilience and growing success in response to the unprecedented challenges faced.

The panel discussion will focus on:

• Different experiences
• Research beyond the borders – how to manage multiple campuses in different States
• Accelerating online research management processes
• Navigating challenges faced by HDR students
• Beyond 2020 – mechanisms to ensure ECRs/MCRs (particularly primary caregivers) are not disadvantaged now and in the future

Attendees will be encouraged to submit questions for the panel. Dr Sarah Wright, Manager (Research Infrastructure) at the University of Southern Queensland will facilitate the session.

Panellists:

Professor Susan Kinnear is the Dean of the School of Graduate Research at CQUniversity, a position she has held for six years. Susan is also an executive member on the Australian Council of Graduate Research. Susan’s research background is varied, with a PhD in the experimental sciences (aquatic toxicology) and experience across regional development, environmental studies, business and a range of other disciplinary areas. Susan has successfully secured and managed contract research projects with industry; local, state and federal government and the tertiary sector; and she continues to supervise masters and doctoral-level students alongside her research management role.


Mr Andrew Johnson is a leader in research management, operations and strategy, with demonstrated success in leading some of the largest research initiatives in Australia. This includes the establishment of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University. This was an A$84m imitative which in a period of four years completed three specialised research buildings, built an 80FTE research capacity and grew income seven-fold.

Recently as the Director of Research Services at UNE he has led the development of initiatives such as the Research Integrity team and is currently contributing to major renewal of research management and structural functions at that university.

As Director, Research Development, he led the start-up of the highly successful Research Development Team at the University of Newcastle.

He is experienced in building collaborations and delivering projects between universities and public and private sectors. He has advanced abilities in engagement, partner relationships and leading communications.  He has experience in collaboration with Engineering, Health and public and not for profit sectors.

Through the Australian Research Management Society, Andrew leads his profession as a co convener of its internationally engaged Directors forum.


Associate Professor Jason White has over 20 years of experience in research at a number of different universities and institutes. He joined Charles Sturt University as Director, Research Office in June 2018.

Jason has had key project management roles in programs funded by Meat and Livestock Australia and Muscular Dystrophy Australia and has had significant involvement in collaborative projects with the Food Safety Centre within the School of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Tasmania.

At the University of Melbourne he has played a prominent role in the area of research ethics and integrity being on the Animal Ethics committee, as a Research Integrity Advisor and member of the Universities Research Ethics and Integrity Steering Committee.

He is a Graduate of Charles Sturt University and the University of Melbourne, being particularly proud of his rich family history at Charles Sturt University.

He has spent time at the European Molecular Biology Laboratories in Rome and at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

He currently sits on the committee of management, as Research Director, of the not-for-profit organisation Muscular Dystrophy Australia and has served on NHMRC Grant review Panels.


Dr Steve Rogers, Director of Research & Innovation who commenced at CDU earlier this year, has a wealth of research and high-level leadership experience, with almost 30 years’ experience (15 years at the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer level) of leading and managing research, technology development and innovation in the public and private sectors, with CSIRO, AIMS, two Cooperative Research Centres, commercial consultancy and the Centre for Appropriate Technology Ltd.  An experienced company Director, Steve has held non-Executive Director positions with a number of commercial and NFP organisations. He recently led the establishment of a new company CfAT Satellite Enterprises Pty Ltd that partnered with Viasat Inc, a global satellite technology company, to establish a $6M dollar, equity finance supported commercial satellite ground station in Alice Springs.

With a PhD in Microbiology, has worked in agricultural research, environmental biogeochemistry, contaminated site remediation and ecotoxicity, and mining geomicrobiology.  At CDU Steve leads the Office of Research and Innovation, manages the Advanced Manufacturing Alliance and is co-lead in the current CRC for Water in the North bid to the Commonwealth. Steve has also recently been contracted by the Darwin Innovation Hub to provide research and innovation advice to businesses through the Commonwealth Government Entrepreneurs Program.


CPD: Accredited members (ARMAs and ARMFs) will automatically accrue 1 CPD hour per session.

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this workshop, you must contact the arms.adminofficer@flinders.edu.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.

Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.

ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
