Research Impact SIG:
Thursday, 27 July at 12PM AEST

The ARMS Research Impact Special Interest Group are delighted to host Dr Juliet Bennett, Collaborative Research Manager at Sydney Policy Lab from The University of Sydney for the session this month.

Who defines successful research, and how is it measured? Juliet will share her “static-process framework”, derived from her PhD in process philosophy, and together we will explore its application to research impact. We will tease out how “static” abstract measures can be nested in “process-relational” contexts. This multi-dimensional approach prioritises the perspectives of communities whom research or policies are intended to benefit. It recognises measurable outputs such as policy briefs and research papers, and the importance of interpreting these in their cultural and social contexts. This includes capturing the harder-to-measure short-term and long-term impacts they have on communities, policy-makers and researchers themselves.

Dr Juliet Bennett was recently awarded her PhD, which mapped a shift in thinking, worldviews, cultures and political economic systems to mitigate climate change, based on the axis of static thinking and process thinking. Juliet has worked extensively in business and NGO sectors, and for ten years at the University of Sydney in both professional and academic roles including the Executive Officer and the Acting Director of the Sydney Peace Foundation. Her publications are available at: https://sydney.academia.edu/JulietBennett
