Established Level Accreditation Program Elective:
Informed Decision Making in Research Management: Quantitative Data Collection and Analysis Methodologies
This elective is delivered over three (3) partial days:
- Friday 20 September 2024, 10:00AM - 11:00AM AEST
- Thursday 26 September 2024, 10:00AM - 1:00PM AEST
- Friday 08 November 2024, 11:00AM - 3:00PM AEDT
Participants are required to attend all three (3) sessions.

- Madhuri Dutta, Head, Centre for Operational and Research Excellence, CORE India, George Institute for Global Health, India;
- Melinda Fischer, Senior Research Administrator, Clemson University, SC, USA; and
- Cristina Oliveira, Executive manager of the Information Management Research Center (MagIC), NOVA IMS, Portugal.
Program Description:
This elective will explore quantitative data collection (focussing on survey tools) and the subsequent analysis of the data collected. The presenters will cover the topics listed below, from data collection, through analysis, limitations, presentation, and dissemination. Key points will be illustrated by using examples from the RAAAP (Research Administration as a Profession) series of projects.

- How to design data collection tools (e.g. survey questionnaires)
- How to maximize response rates
- Finding existing data
- How to find data on the internet
- How to convert data into a useable format
- Collecting data
- How to analyse quantitative data
- Some tools will be covered, but we will focus on using Excel (due to its ubiquity)
- Understanding the limitations of data
- Including how the data were collected, and sample sizes
- How to present the results of data analysis
- Descriptive statistics
- Margins of error
- Graphs and Tables
- How to disseminate the findings
- Reports
- Social media (e.g. LinkedIn)
- Blogs/websites
- Journal articles
Pre-requisites:
The elective has no formal pre-requisites but experience in using Excel will be an advantage.
Pre-reading:
In terms of prior reading, Saylor Academy (2012) is required and other references are optional and will be advised in the Body of Knowledge (brochure).
Who should take this module:
This elective should be suitable for any professional whose role intersects with research management and has a need to (potentially collect and) analyse quantitative data in order to inform decision making. As such it would be suitable at any level, geographic location, and in any research support work context.
Assessment:
At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to complete a non-compulsory assessment; due one (1) week following the end of the elective, Friday 22 November 2024, or as advised otherwise.
This assessment is compulsory for participants currently paticipating in the ELAP, those who will be registering in the Established Level Accreditation Program (ELAP) within 12 months of completing this Elective or those seeking CPD.
Cost:
ARMS Members: $585 AUD per elective (GST inclusive) - Price will be discounted in the Shopping Cart.
Non-Members: $685 AUD per elective (GST inclusive)
CPD: Accredited members (ARMAs and ARMFs) will automatically accrue 8 CPD hours per elective. Registered ELAP participants who successfully complete the assessment will receive 10 ELAP points.

As per the Established Level Accreditation Program (ELAP) Terms and Conditions, Elective registrations are non-cancellable or refundable. You will however be allowed to transfer your enrolment for another scheduled session throughout your three-year enrolment OR transfer your registration to another eligible ARMS member. Any changes in enrolment circumstances must be made in writing to the ARMS Accreditation Program Administrator in the first instance, at least ten (10) working days prior to commencement of the Elective. ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event.
