The purpose of this module is to provide an insight into the current and evolving practices around the management of  Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidate admission and examination, including the understanding of:

  • The HDR candidate application, acceptance and admission lifecycle for both domestic and international applicants;
  • The rules governing the eligibility assessment for HDR candidature; and
  • The thesis submission and examination lifecycle and timeline.

Key learning outcomes

 By the end of this module research administrators should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the following:

  • The principles underlying admissions processes and procedures for domestic and international HDR applicants;
  • How to effectively manage HDR applicant eligibility, assessment and processing of admission offers;
  • How to effectively manage external parties associated with candidate enrolment (e.g., scholarships; grants; external partners), including IP and third-party agreements;
  • The risks associated with HDR candidate admission;
  • The principles underlying thesis submission and examination; and
  • The risks associated with thesis examination.

Who should attend?

This module is suitable for senior research administrators, academics and research managers and Associate Deans wishing to update their knowledge in this area. It would also be suitable for junior research administrators wishing to progress their career.

Research managers and administrators from all organisations and institutions will benefit from this module including those from:

  • Research agencies and institutes;
  • Medical research institutes;
  • Research and development corporations;
  • Research centres;
  • Government departments;
  • Funding bodies;
  • Industrial research and development teams;
  • Service providers;
  • Commercialisation bodies; and
  • Consultancies.

It is recommended that this module be taken in conjunction with Module 3.1: Higher Degree by Research ScholarshipsModule 3.2: Higher Degree by Research International Partnerships and Module 3.3: Higher Degree by Research Candidature Management.

This is an elective module for individuals completing the ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation Program in all regions. Each module can also be taken as a stand-alone unit for professional development purposes.

ARMS CANCELLATION POLICY

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this workshop, you must contact ARMSAccreditation@researchmanagement.org.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.

Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.

ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
